Saul Bass-Inspired Movie Poster

For our Digital Arts class, we were tasked to redesign a poster of a movie of our choice, in the style of the movie posters of graphic designer Saul Bass.

I chose DreamWorks Pictures and Nickelodeon Studios's "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events". I grew up reading (and extremely loving to bits!!) the thirteen-book series for its dark humor, and I adored the movie adaptation so much - the art direction, set design, the whole production was exquisite and sublime.
I used the shape of the three Baudelaire orphans from this poster above and the shape of Count Olaf's head from the photo movie still below (both courtesy of DreamWorks Pictures and Nickelodeon Studios).
The first poster I made:
....was complicated. It had a lot going on, compared to a real Saul Bass movie poster.

My professor suggested to simplify more certain details and adjust certain elements; for example the Baudelaire children could be applied as a negative space to the head/ shadow of Count Olaf (which honestly I was not able to think of at the time). Thank you Miss!!

During editing, I also remembered that the eye was a truly strong motif in the design elements of the movie, so I decided to make Count Olaf's eye more pronounced in my poster by making coloring it white.

And here is my final poster design:
We were also made to do color variations:
Here's a mockup:
Thank you so much for viewing!!
